A Poignant Portal to Arizona’s Military Heritage

The origins of Arizona’s military history stretch back long before statehood. The Spanish Conquistadors were among the first to explore what is now Arizona, seeking wealth and territory in the 16th century. Our exhibits trace this legacy, allowing you to experience history in an engaging and educational way.

  • The Spanish Conquistadors

    Learn how Spanish explorers and settlers built presidios and missions throughout the region, including Tucson's 1775 presidio, laying the foundation for Arizona’s military presence.

  • The Spanish-American War

    Follow the story of Arizona’s two troops who joined Theodore Roosevelt’s First Volunteer Cavalry, better known as the Rough Riders. These brave men made history with their fearless charge at the Battle of San Juan Hill.

  • World Wars I and II

    Arizona’s soldiers were critical to America’s success in both World Wars. The 158th Infantry Regiment, famously known as the Bushmasters, earned national recognition for their jungle warfare skills in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

  • The Indian Wars

    Discover how Arizona’s frontier military posts like Fort Whipple and Fort Apache were established to protect settlers during the Indian Wars, where Arizona became a crucial theater in the conflicts between U.S. forces and Native American tribes.

  • The Civil War

    Relive the three significant Civil War skirmishes that took place on Arizona soil—Picacho Peak, Stanwix Station, and La Paz—and understand how Arizona played a role in this national conflict.

    One of our most popular exhibits, this fully restored helicopter was flown in combat during the Vietnam War. Step inside and imagine what it was like for the brave pilots and soldiers who served in one of America’s most challenging conflicts.

  • Armored Vehicles and Military Equipment

    Explore our collection of military vehicles, including tanks and armored personnel carriers. These powerful machines demonstrate the might and innovation of the U.S. military.
